Chapter 17

Two Weeks Before The First

Roger sat in his car in the university parking lot for a few minutes while the radio was at a low hum. He stared into the night, looking at the tall parking lot lamps as they illuminated parts of the area. He was now on his own at work, which would buy him time and the opportunity without anyone disturbing him. He wouldn’t have to check in with Vern until later in the shift and now that he knew what he was doing. Frank was no longer working the night shift with them.

He met Vern in the janitorial office, gave him a quick salute, punched in, and put his lunch in the office fridge. Vern still hadn’t warmed up to Roger as quickly as he thought he would, but a part of him didn’t care either. He just kept doing his own thing. Vern was set to retire soon and knew that he was being replaced. He was an expert at his job and knew that he had big shoes to fill. He wasn’t sure yet if Roger was the guy to do this. He was the type of guy that didn’t give his respect to people from day one, you had to earn it over time. Vern was a widow with no kids, and was pessimistic about life in general. He didn’t care what Roger had done prior, or who he was; he had to prove himself.

“Good morning, Vern,” Roger said jokingly. Working the night shift, he didn’t know whether it was appropriate to say good night upon arrival or good morning. He always went with the latter because he found it humorous.

“Ya, ya,” Vern mumbled under his breath, either not getting the joke or just thinking it was stupid.

“I am going to start in the science building tonight and finish in the landscaping building if you need me,” Roger mentioned.

“Whatever, do your thing,” Vern replied, seeming not to care.

Roger shrugged at his response, gathered the necessary tools he needed for cleaning, and made his way over to the science building, walking along the bridged corridor that separated the buildings. He stopped halfway on the walkway and peered down onto the campus to take in the darkness and deadness. Before taking this role, he had only seen the campus busy in the daylight, with the student body rushing from class to class like ants running around the pavement with seemingly no place to go. He was one of those ants at one point in time. He stepped back from the window and continued on into the science building.

Roger usually worked from the bottom of the building back to the top to take the corridor back, but tonight he was going to change it up. He was going to begin with the chemistry classroom and lab. He mopped both rooms, gathered the garbage, and put them on his cart; these would be taken out to the bin later. He stopped for a second and listened to see if he could hear a radio playing.
